ABC Wednesday: "P" is for Putters and Putting

To continue with my golf theme of the week in honor of the Players Championship being in town, my ABC Wednesday choice this week is Putters and Putting.

In golf, the putter is the club used when on the green to gently roll the ball into the cup to finish out the hole. They are generally the shortest club in the bag (34-35 inches is standard length). The head of the club has very low loft - only 2-6 degrees - to get the ball rolling on the ground quickly after impact (they are not completely flat, or 0 degree loft, as some people think).

Nobody knows where the name "putter" came from or why it was applied to this particular club - and hence the stroke made when using it (putting) - but one good theory is that it derives from the Dutch verb "putten", meaning "to roll". The idea fits since the club is intended to roll the ball, as opposed to the other clubs which hit it into the air.

Since my skills at golf are none, I liked learning a little more about this sport.
I guess it must be relaxing to play, but not pretty sure!

I have never played golf. It looks a little bit slow for me...I like sports with more speed (Speedgolf!!!) I guess. But I have a friend who love golfing. Maybe I'll try it some day:)

Very good "entry" for the P day. Obviously you're a golf fan - hope you get below PAR next time you're out PLAYING. ;D

It sounds like you are a golfer yourself. I've never been any good so I'll stick with miniature golf.

(Phew! Just catching up having spent a few days away on the motorbike catching some sunshine....sorry I am late)

Loved the information! There is just enough for me to memorise so I can impress others with my newly found knowledge! LOL!
