Sky Watch Friday

Spring sprung quickly in Florida last week and it appears the last of our cold weather is gone for the winter and summer will soon be upon us (spring lasts a few weeks and then the summer heat and sun settles in for the next 8 months).

A day at the beach on Saturday found not only a beautiful blue sky and blue ocean, but a nearly full moon hanging low on the horizon (click on the photo to see it full size for a better view of the moon):

Watch your step

One peril of the ocean - jellyfish!  They sometimes wash up on shore so you have to watch your step even if you aren't heading out into the water.

Just A Day At The Beach

Saturday saw one of the first truly warm days of spring - high around 77 F degrees, nice breeze, lots of sun, etc.  So like many residents of the area we decided to spend a few hours at the beach for the first time in a few months.

ABC Wednesday: "O" is for Ocean

A bit of a cop out for ABC Wednesday this week with an easy answer to something starting with "O" - but I've been busy, so I have an excuse (not the least of which being a problem with my car involving Oil...)
But ocean we have in Florida - namely the Atlantic Ocean.

Waves gently lapping onto shore in New Smyrna Beach, FL

The Atlantic Ocean is the second largest in the world (behind the Pacific, of course) and covers 41.1 million square miles(106.4 million square kilometres), or roughly 1/5th of the earth's surface.

Beachgoers enjoying the day at Fernandina Beach, FL

The average depths of the Atlantic, with its adjacent seas, is 3,339 meters (10,936 ft); without them it is 3,926 metres (12,881 ft). The greatest depth, 8,605 metres (28,232 ft), is in the Puerto Rico Trench (specifically known as the Milwaukee Deep). The Atlantic is also the saltiest of the world's oceans.

Night falls on palms and grasses next to the Atlantic at Neptune Beach, FL near Jacksonville.

End of the Road

Literally. This is where Atlantic Blvd meets... well... the Atlantic! Interstate 10 runs all the way from the Atlantic ocean outside of Jacksonville to the Pacific ocean outside of Santa Monica, California. It doesn't actually reach the ocean, but Atlantic Blvd more or less takes over the same route and ends here at Atlantic Beach.
