ABC Wednesday: "A" is for Anteater

Round two of ABC Wednesday! "A" is for Anteater, one of my favorite animals at the zoo. I just find them endlessly amusing. I had always imagined they were rather small - until I saw them in real life - but those are Aardvarks, which are small (about the size of a pig) and found in Africa. These big fellas are South American Giant Anteaters: 2-3 tall and 5-6 feet long from snout to tail and with bulky bodies, strong muscles, and large claws on their feet for digging into hard soil in their search for ants, termites, grubs, and other insects. They are beautiful creatures in their own special way, perfectly created for their purpose in life.

I find these animals fascinating. In Sounth Africa we two species of anteater - the pangolin and the aardvark (literally translates from Afrikaans into eartk pig).
In many area you see evidence of their presence in hollowed out ant hills.
The pangolin is one animal I have yet to see in the wild.

I must laugh at myself, I didn't understand the "anteater" immediately, what's an ante-ater, or a an-teater? But then I looked at the picture and understood.

Nice pictures of an animal I have never seen. Another lesson today. I wonder if it would be possible to rent one for the summer ;-)

Great pics - I find anteaters fascinating. It's amazing how such a bulky creature can survive by eating tiny little ants.

My first ABC is up at Siani's Pot-Pourri.

I've always loved Aardvarks and I'm thinking about 'adopting' one at London Zoo...
