After taking photos for a while we were walking towards the older section to take pictures of the pond and such and were stopped by a security guard (aka rent-a-cop) who told us we weren't allowed to take pictures! I asked why. He didn't know. Since Erin made me behave we turned the camera off and I slung it over my shoulder and we kept walking. Not five minutes later a new security guard began following us in their SUV - driving only as fast as we were walking, staying just behind us, tracking us like criminals! Absurd! I wanted to confront them but Erin wouldn't let me. They should be worrying about shoplifters, not amateur photographers taking pictures of their outdoor holiday decorations!
An email will be sent to the mall management company to complain and ask about their photography policy. I don't want to see anyone taking pictures with Santa or I will call security!

Great pics, and how STUPID!!! What would be a reason you can't take pictures of OUTSIDE? Grrrr...I think we should get together a photography field trip...
Ahem...you did mean to say 'Christmas' decorations...right? Just checking! :-)
Very Nice CHRIST-X lights.
They are probably afraid you might "steal" the idea of hanging lights for the season.
Or, they are extremely frightened that you are going to open a Town Center Outdoor Mall in your backyard ad take business away from them.
Or, they (security) is actually staffed with people who flunked out of the real Police academy.
I'm a police officer and I ran across your page. I just wanted to let you know that as a fellow amateur photographer I should let you know that you have every right to take any picture you want in a public place. General rule of thumb is this: If your eye can see it in public, you can shoot it in public. Railroad Police are real bad about trying to stop you from shooting photography also. Good luck though, and great shots BTW!
